SKIFF 2014: Tutajenga Ao?
We are pleased to announce the 9th edition of the Salaam Kivu International Film Festival (SKIFF), which will take place in Goma, DRCongo from 4-13 July, 2014!
SKIFF 2014: Tutajenga Ao? What Do We Stand For?
Dates: 4-13 July, 2014
Location: Goma, DR Congo
The theme for SKIFF 2014 is Tutajenga Ao? (what do we stand for?) For decades, Congo has been in the crossfire of economic pillage, devastating violence, and a global consensus of silence. With the recent defeat of the M23 and the upcoming 2016 presidential elections, there is a new and precarious sense of optimism and hope beginning to emerge. SKIFF 2014 is dedicated to transforming this hope into action by putting the local, regional, national, and international community in front of a simple question: Are we going to build? Or are we going to destroy? Through dialogue, reflection, and a call to action, SKIFF 2014 explores the role of each and every one of us in Congo’s next step of development.

Opening Night Welcome:
We are happy to welcome you to the 9th edition of SKIFF, to celebrate with you the fruits of the efforts we have made for more than a decade now, to impress upon the world—locally and globally—the importance of culture in bringing peace, stability, and prosperity to this region. But while we are happy to see that the world is starting to listen, to believe, and even to take action on a larger scale, our work is far from done. Yes, we have managed for nine consecutive years now to pull together a festival that meets international standards even without financial support; yes we have been a springboard for local artists to succeed internationally; yes, we have shown the world that Goma can be a capital of art, not just a place of violence. But now it is time to unit our individual efforts to build strong institutions of culture, institutions that prioritize local agendas rather than catering to international funders.
That is why we are asking ourselves, our families and communities, our districts, regions, and all members of our nation: tutajenga, ao? We ask this question because we recognize the new trend in activism is to point out the work that others are failing to do rather than to take on that work ourselves; more and more instead of acting on observations, we find people eager to criticize without then implementing alternatives. It has become enough to post empty words on Facebook, or to develop a hashtag that, in the end, has no real effect on the material changes we seek to make. So we are asking, tutajenga, ao? We are not asking utajenga, not mtajenga?, but we—are we going to build or are we going to sit back and criticize? Are we going to take action, or applaud ourselves for empty words? Are we going to develop our own initiatives or are we going to become the lackeys of Western projects? Are we going to build or are we going to destroy?
As with everything in life, people flock to success then want credit for the work of others. We are seeing that in small part here in North-Kivu as the world starts to send its millions to bring culture, art, and peace to this fraught region. But we already have culture and art, and we believe it is up to us to build our own peace. We can work hand in hand, but we will not bend to mandates that come from afar; we welcome cooperation, but not domination. It is in this spirit that we welcome you to SKIFF 2014—a place where together we can choose to build our own future. The choice is ours…

Bienvenue:
