The U.S. Embassy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reached local youth audiences through its support for the Fifth Annual Salaam Kivu Film International Film Festival (SKIFF) in Goma October 22-31. Messages concerning Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and HIV/AIDS were prominent in the works performed at the festival, which included 10 days of film viewings, workshops, concerts, and competitions. A hip-hop dance competition and concert by Congolese rapper Lexxus Legal drew more than 3,000 young people, and a concert by Reggae legend Natty Dread closed out the program. U.S. Government support included PEPFAR funding and Public Affairs staff participation in festival events.

The words of Petna Ndaliko have become almost prophetic. Just before the SKIFF film festival in Goma, he announced the festival would go on whether there were rebels approaching or not. And indeed: the rebels advanced, but for the festival it was ‘business as usual’…. Click here for full article |
